Speed-optimized architectureInside the PowerBook G4 is your choice of a screamingly fast 1GHz or 867MHz PowerPC G4 processor with Velocity Engine and 1MB of DDR SRAM level 3 cache. Advanced processor design and memory architecture are among several core advantages that enable the PowerBook G4 to pack such a tremendous wallop. The level 3 cache is high-speed dedicated memory to the processor and boosts system performance by providing quick access to data and instructions en route to the processor. Fact is, the PowerBook G4 powers past Pentium 4-based notebooks by up to 44 percent in Adobe Photoshop testing.**  The legendary SuperDriveYour PowerBook G4 with SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW) comes loaded with iDVD software, and can be used to burn DVDs which can be played in most consumer DVD players. The SuperDrive also lets you use iTunes to burn your own music CDs, and the Disc Burner feature in Mac OS X to burn data CDs. The SuperDrive reads DVD titles at 6x, and writes to 4.7-gigabyte DVD-R discs at 1x. Additionally, the SuperDrive reads CDs at 24x, writes to CD-R media at 8x, and writes to CD-RW at 4x. It supports DVD-Video, DVD-ROM and DVD-R, as well as CD-ROM, CD-Audio, CD-R, CD-RW, CD Bridge, CD Extended, CD Mixed Mode and Photo CD media. The SuperDrive comes standard on the 1GHz PowerBook G4. The 867MHz PowerBook G4 comes with a Combo drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW) which enables you to burn CDs and read both DVDs and CDs. Faster and Larger Hard DrivesThe PowerBook G4 uses the latest in portable hard drive technology, enabling video professionals to quickly transfer large video files in real time directly from a DV camcorder. Data is packed even more densely onto this new generation of hard drives, enabling both the 4200RPM 40GB and 60GB hard drives to have fast raw transfers of up to 298 Mbps (megabits per second) which is equivalent to an average of 26MB/sec sustained transfer rate at the OD. This is a performance increase over the older generation 5400RPM hard drives which have a lower data density and thus had a raw data rate of only 262Mbps (22 MB/sec sustained transfer rate at the OD). * 5 hours applies to standard 867 MHz model.
